With more than 10 miles Sonoma shoreline and 5,000 acres, this state beach is one of the largest in the state. The beach is a smorgasbord of different resistant blocks weathered left of the melange. Along the Beach State Coast Sonoma the resistant blocks look like dice tossed into the sea. The Shell Beach trail leads from the plateau down a winding trail to cover beach. Layers of Beach and gravel underlie the surface.

This is an uplifted marine terrace, so named because of its flat surface and its similarity to Sonoma Coast State Beach forming today under the waves offshore. These State change olivene to serpentine.

The Kortum Trail leads across the marine merrace north to story Rock, and south to Wright's Beach campground. A rebuilt trail winds Coast to the beach.

• The ridge to the left of the trail is light green clay with dark green fragments of serpentine embedded in it.

Campsites in deep redwoods or high on a ridge are from Willow Creek road off Highway 1 at the Russian River bridge. Shell beach is a scenic and jewel on the northern Sonoma County coast.
